CommoditiesBLG Reception area

We have specialised knowledge in shipping and commodities litigation and arbitration. Our lawyers have represented clients in the Commercial Court and before trade associations and other arbitral bodies in London and across the world, including the Grain and Feed Trade Association, The Federation of Oils and Seeds and Fats Association, The Refined Sugar Association, The London Metal Exchange, The Liverpool Cotton Association, The London Maritime Arbitrators Association, The London Court of International Arbitration, and the ICC in London, Paris, Hong Kong, Singapore, and other jurisdictions.

Our Singapore, Hong Kong, and Shanghai offices are also well placed to advise on disputes before PORAM in Malaysia, CIETAC in China, HKIA in Hong Kong, SIA in Singapore, and the ICC and other arbitral bodies.

We have particular strengths in soft and hard commodities including crude oil, petroleum, chemicals, metals, grain, vegetable oils, coffee, sugar, rice, and cotton. Our clients include international trading houses, commodity and derivatives traders, and brokers, oil and power companies, food manufacturers, banks and financiers, crushers, refiners, mills, warehousemen, ship owners, charterers, and marine insurers.

Our team works on matters worldwide and has strong links in the North American, South American, Far Eastern and Indian markets and regularly acts in derivative and structured trade finance disputes. We are also recognised for our work in the futures market.

Major cases we have worked on include Deutsche Schachtbau v Raknoc & Shell International, Kloeckner v Gatoil, the m.v. 'P', the 'Taria', Comdel v Siporex and the Sumitomo Copper Scandal. A member of our team is currently chairman of the UK ICC Committee on Commercial Law and Practice.

One member of our team is described in Chambers & Partners, 2005 as being "an outstanding figure in the industry", "he knows the commodities world inside-out" and "can give you an answer straight away to any question".
